arboreus, after Rodchenko

Public Art for Lynn Valley Library & Plaza

The original is unfaithful to the translation.
— Jorge Luis Borges,1943

The artwork is an assemblage of pieces related by the imagery and references of a giant cedar, and by ideas of the strength and fragility of culture. The tree refers to the tree of knowledge, the historic logging industry of Lynn Valley, and the local forested landscape. The installation is also about suspension between reality and imagination.

The dominating visual component of arboreus is the image of a magnificent tree. The tree is presented in the immaterial medium of glass – while the other components are robust, material. The dichotomy of material and immaterial reflects on the intangible nature of thought paired with the profound impact of literature and culture.
